MOSCOW — Seven people suspected of carrying out a grenade and bomb attack in the troubled Russian region of Dagestan were killed by security forces in a shootout on Saturday, Russian news agencies reported.
The seven were suspected of carrying out the attack outside a restaurant in the regional capital, Makhachkala, on Friday. Several people were wounded, a spokesman for Russia’s Anti-Terrorist Committee told Itar-Tass agency.
The Interfax news agency, citing the Investigative Committee department for Dagestan, said one woman was among the suspects killed when the police stormed a house where they were hiding near Makhachkala.
The Muslim-majority Dagestan region has been plagued by bombings and shootings that target state and police officials as part of a campaign by militants to create an Islamist state there.
Makhachkala is about 385 miles east of the Black Sea resort Sochi, where the Winter Olympic Games will be held next month. President Vladimir Putin has made the games a top priority for promoting Russia’s image abroad.
