In most of the studies, it has been found that people who are suffering or have a history of psychiatric problems are likely to expire prematurely. The most common factors responsible for premature deaths were suicide and serious injuries.
Past 40 years of data was taken by JAMA Psychiatry and was analyzed. The data comprised of two million people and was concluded that a chances of deaths increases because of brain injury.
The study led by researchers at the University of Oxford and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm analyzed Swedish medical records from 1969 to 2009. Patients who were successful in surviving during the first-six months of danger period after the injury were observed.
It was found that just 0.2% of people without any kind of injury died prematurely before the age of 56. The figure increased to 3 times among people who suffered from traumatic brain injury. Moreover, the rate increased to 4% among people with some or other type of psychiatric disorder. Every year, over one million people suffering from a traumatic brain injury are taken to hospital in Europe.
