Mullenweg - whose role at Automattic thus far involved product building - has taken over the responsibility as the Automattic CEO from Toni Schneider, who has been the CEO of the company for the last more than eight years. However, last year, Schneider took a sabbatical from his role as the CEO, helping Mullenweg gain experience in steering the company.
With Mullenweg taking over the reins of Automattic, which he founded in 2006, Schneider will continue working at the company; and will take on the product-building role which Mullenweg has been shouldering thus far.
Schneider said that his new responsibility will help him pursue new project ideas. Further adding that he feels a sense of completion about Automattic's achievements, Schneider said in a blog post that he will focus on new products, while Mullenweg runs the company.
About Mullenweg and Schneider's role reversal at Automattic, Mullenweg said: "Internally this isn't a big change as our roles have always been quite fluid, and I've had some recent practice filling in for him for a few months last year when he was on sabbatical."
