The Chinese-developed COS will compete with popular operating systems, Google's Android OS and Apple's iOS. Going by the official statements, the Chinese government plans to ensure that the COS becomes most popular operating system in China.
Although the developers of the COS have not yet disclosed many details about the new platform, they have revealed that the OS is fully developed in-house; and it includes applicability to a wide array of computer-based hardware, not merely smartphones.
A short video presentation about the COS has appeared in the Sina Weibo social network; and it shows that the COS has a strikingly similar interface to the Android OS. The COS developers claim that the operating system will not only run Java applications, but will also support HTML5. In addition, it will boast compatibility with over 100,000 apps, including Android apps.
About the key objective behind the launch of the COS, Li Minshu - the director of the Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences - said that the COS' release will break the monopoly of overseas firms on fundamental software; and will mark the introduction of an OS with China's own intellectual property rights.
