Nearly 60% of Americans are considered obese and the number is increasing every year. More and more diet plans were introduced such as low fat diet that is said to make you lose fat in just a few days.
It has been observed that Americans are opting to drink diet soda, but it is not necessary that the calorie intake of such people is less. Approximately 20% of Americans drink diet drinks and the figure of such people is increased by 17% from 1965.
Researchers analyzed data from a U.S. survey of 24,000 people over a period of 10 years. They found that people who drink diet beverages were compensating the amount of calorie intake by eating more snacks and meals.
Obese diet beverage drinkers consumed 2,058 calories every day in food as compared to people who drink regular drinks. The amount of calories consumed by these people is 1,897 in food, which is far less then people who drink diet beverages pretending that they are too health conscious.
Lead author Sara Bleich said the artificial sweeteners could even have negative effect on the functioning of body by affecting the metabolism or cravings. The revelation has been published in the American Journal of Public Health.
