Increasing Vitamin D Intake could better the Plight of MS PatieSubmitted by Pallavi Sharma on Tue, 01/21/2014 - 10:04

A new study has come up with findings that could better the plight of patients at early stages of multiple sclerosis (MS). Researchers at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) said that low levels of vitamin D are likely to quickly progress the diseases in patients who are in early stages of MS. Also, the low level of vitamin D is a strong predictor of the early stage of MS in patients, concluded the study.
So, the study has advised such patients to increase their vitamin D intake as is could help them stave off disease symptoms.
The study was conducted in collaboration with Bayer HealthCare. “Because low vitamin D levels are common and can be easily and safely increased by oral supplementation, these findings may contribute to better outcomes for many MS patients”, said lead author Alberto Ascherio, Professor of epidemiology and nutrition at HSPH.
Multiple Sclerosis, being a central nervous disorder, leads patients to suffer from problems with muscle control and strength, vision, balance, feeling and thinking.
Ascherio said the findings of their study have serious recommendations for identification and correction of vitamin D insufficiency and making it part of the standard care for patients diagnosed with early stages of MS.nts: Study
