AT&T to launch new iPhone accessory to make iPhone an Isis-ready, NFC-enabled deviceA leaked image provided by Engadget has revealed that bigwig US wireless carrier AT&T is - via a new iPhone accessory - apparently preparing to bring `near field communication' (NFC) functionality and mobile payments to the iPhone.
The new iPhone accessory which AT&T is seemingly set to launch is a special case which will likely be dubbed the `Incipio Cashwrap.' The case will convert the iPhone into an Isis-ready, NFC-enabled device.  Isis is a fairly new mobile payments solution which is being backed by three US wireless carriers - AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.  The Isis service went live across the US on November 14, 2013.
According to the leaked Engadget image, the new `Incipio Cashwrap' iPhone case will contain a micro-NFC chip complete with a secure element which can be used by the iPhone users for making wireless payments via the Isis mobile payments service.
To put it differently, the `Incipio Cashwrap' iPhone case will give iPhone users the ability to use their smartphone for NFC mobile payments, despite the fact that the handset does not actually feature an NFC chip.
The retail price of the `Incipio Cashwrap' iPhone case upon launch will be nearly $70; though the timeline for the availability of the case is not yet known.  Moreover, in addition to the Cashwrap case, iPhone users interested in Isis-based mobile payments will also have to install a free app, the Isis Mobile Wallet.
