Have you ever wondered why dolphins are able to swim easily even when they are next to boats getting propelled by engines? Answer has been found in a research carried out by a group of researchers from West Chester University in US.
Lead researcher Frank Fish, head of the Liquid Life Laboratory, has affirmed that in normal routine, dolphins are able to produce power 10 times more than the fittest human athlete can.
Fish said that in order to know about the level of power that can be produced by a dolphin, they designed an experiment. "I used some hydrodynamics models that looked at the motion of the flukes (dolphin tails) and came up with the realisation that dolphins could produce very high amounts of power", affirmed Fish.
Next in their list was to measure a technique on dolphins that was initially designed to measure the muscle power of Olympic athletes. For this, the study researchers have studied a pair known as Primo and Puka. In the experiment, they produced bubbles in a SCUBA tank and monitored the dolphins when they saw along the curtain of bubbles.
It was found that dolphins were able to produce 549 watts of power and when they accelerated more, they generated 5,400 W.
