Canonical to discontinue Ubuntu Touch support for three Nexus devices

Canonical to discontinue Ubuntu Touch support for three Nexus devices

Canonical to discontinue Ubuntu Touch support for three Nexus devicesIn a Monday report, OMG! Ubuntu has revealed that Canonical is dropping its Ubuntu Touch mobile software support for three Nexus devices.  The move by Canonical to reduce the number of devices that it supports with Ubuntu Touch comes after the company's original release of a developer preview of Ubuntu Touch for Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10 devices in early 2013.
The three Nexus devices for which Canonical is discontinuing Ubuntu Touch support include the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7 2012 edition, and the Nexus 10.  These devices initially had Ubuntu Touch support, but will be losing it soon.
As a result of Canonical's move to discontinue Ubuntu Touch support for the three mentioned Nexus devices, the two sole Nexus devices which will have Ubuntu Touch support in the near future include the Nexus 4 and new Nexus 7 2013 edition.
The decision to bring down the number of devices supported by Ubuntu Touch is apparently rooted in Canonical's efforts to give a push to Ubuntu 14.04 - which reportedly corresponds to April 2014 for a launch timeframe - and, thus, enable the Ubuntu engineering team to "ensure focus on the Nexus 4 and emulator polish."
Meanwhile, along with announcing its decision to withdraw Ubuntu Touch support on three mentioned Nexus devices, Canonical has also said that it does not have any immediate plans to offer Ubuntu Touch support on the latest Nexus 5 smartphone anytime in the future.
