A research carried out by a group of researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and King's College London has unveiled that the above mentioned and often termed as a "guilty pleasure" is quite beneficial in keeping you guarded against diabetes.
The study researchers have said that maximum benefits can be derived from the higher intake of anthocyanins, which are found in strawberries, blackcurrants, blueberries and blackberries.
Increased level of flavonoids and antioxidant compounds found in berry fruits, tea, red wine and chocolate are found to be protective against diseases like cardiovascular problem, hypertension, certain cancers and dementia.
The revelation of the same has been published in the Journal of Nutrition. Lead researcher Prof. Aedin Cassidy from UEA's Norwich Medical School said, "We focused on flavones, which are found in herbs and vegetables such as parsley, thyme, and celery, and anthocyanins, found in berries, red grapes, wine and other red or blue-coloured fruits and vegetables".
The study is one of its kind, which has looked into bioactive compounds to know the benefits they can provide against the risk of diabetes
