Wombs have been transplanted in nine women in Sweden by doctors. These wombs have been donated to them by their relatives in the hope that they can enjoy bliss of motherhood.
Dr. Mats Brannstrom, Head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at the University of Gothenburg and head of the project affirmed that soon the women will conceive with the help of newly transplanted wombs.
All the women who have taken part in the project are in their 30s. Though the intention behind carrying out the project is good, it has raised some new concerns. Some experts have raised questions like whether it’s ethical to use live donors for such experimental procedure.
Answering the concern, John Harris from the University of Manchester, has affirmed that there is no problem to use live donors till the time they are informed about the procedure.
Dr. Brannstrom and team will conduct workshops on how to carry out womb transplants by next month. The revelation of the same will also get published in a scientific report.
