Seasonal Affective Disorder responsible for Depression in People

Seasonal Affective Disorder responsible for Depression in People

Seasonal-Affective-DisorderFor some, cold months mean romantic weather, snuggling in quilt and having piping hot food. But such is not the case for many others who feel sad and even do not feel hungry in these months.
It is said that these people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also known as winter depression. This disorder is found majorly in men in comparison to women.
While describing about the cause of the SAD, psychologist Dr. Seema Hingorrany said that brain has to work extra due to lack of sunlight. This leads to the production of melatonin, which is associated with depression.
She further affirmed, "In addition, what happens is when you have more sunrays on you, you tend to be outdoors and more active. The opposite then happens in the absence of this". There is no particular age for getting affected by SAD and anyone of any age can be in the grip of the same.
There are ways by which problem can be treated ranging from taking anti-depressant after consulting doctor to taking cognitivebehavioural therapy. Exposure to sun for more time is also said to be beneficial in treating symptoms of SAD. Dr. Shreepad Khedekar, a mind-body consultant, has suggested about light therapy.
