As per a survey, around 33% women in Scotland are unaware of the factors that increase the chances of getting diagnosed with cervical cancer. This has led Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, a charity, to come up with an awareness raising campaign that aims to educate women about the disease. It also encourages women to appear for cervical screenings on regular basis.
Not only the Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust, but the Irish Family Planning Association has also launched a campaign. The campaign, which has been initiated yesterday, has distributed 20,000 Pearl of Wisdom pins as well as leaflets to pharmacists, occupational health nurses and health promotion networks.
Dr. Caitríona Henchion, Medical Director of the Irish Family Planning Association, said with the help of regular smear tests, cervical cancer can be prevented. It shall, however, be noted that through the national CervicalCheck programme, women can get these tests done absolutely cost-free.
"Cervical cancer takes a long time to develop and often has no symptoms, but the good news is that it can be prevented", said Dr. Henchion.
