As Pierce, Garnett return to Boston, time to rethink the trades that weren't

It was around this time last year that the first contact between the Clippers and Celtics was made, with a radical idea: Sending venerable big man Kevin Garnett to the West Coast to play for L.A.
Shortly after that, the Nets approached the Celtics about making a deal for small forward Paul Pierce, a lifelong Celtics star who seemed destined to finish out his career in Boston. This was sacrilege among Celtics fans, of course, but team president Danny Ainge had long been itching to remake his over-aged roster.

The Celtics, of course, did not complete either deal, and wound up trading Pierce and Garnett together (with Jason Terry) to Brooklyn on draft night, for a haul that included first-rounders in ’14, ’16 and ’18, as well as Kris Humphries, MarShon Brooks, Gerald Wallace and Kris Joseph.
Now, with Garnett and Pierce slated to come back to Boston as members of the Nets on Sunday for the first time this year, it’s a good time to look back on what might have been. Had things worked out just the right way, the Celtics might have accelerated their rebuilding process by trading Pierce and Garnett at this time last season.
Start with Garnett and the Clippers. At the time, sources told Sporting News, Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro knew he was fighting to keep his job, and knew that his sour relationship with young big man DeAndre Jordan—whose free-throw struggles rendered him useless at the end of games—would be something that would hold his team back.
Del Negro had nearly been fired the previous offseason, and felt that he had to get his team deep into the West playoffs — likely the conference finals — in order to have any chance at a contract extension. He knew he had a better chance to get there with a polished veteran like Garnett on board than with the mistake-prone Jordan in the middle.
The Clippers-Celtics discussions would continue for weeks, right up to the NBA’s trade deadline, but ultimately, there were too many obstacles to getting the deal done. Garnett, who owns a home in Malibu, would have been required to waive his no-trade clause. The Celtics insisted on getting both Jordan and dynamic guard Eric Bledsoe in return for Garnett, which was a very steep price for a declining 36-year-old.
Also, as sources told Sporting News, the Clippers’ splintered front office — with Del Negro on one side, and front office executives Gary Sacks and Andy Roeser on the other — was never on the same page with the deal, anyway.
As for Pierce, the Nets had offered Humphries and Brooks, with a first-round draft pick. That might have been a good starting point for Boston — but only if Garnett was certain to be traded, too. The idea was that, if the Celtics were to have Garnett on board, they needed to keep Pierce and give the pair one last shot at a postseason run. But deal Garnett, and you might as well deal Pierce, too.
Either way, the Nets’ offer was too thin, and Boston would have needed something more — either a ’16 draft pick or a young player like Mirza Teletovic or European star shooting guard Bojan Bogdanovic, whose rights belong to Brooklyn. The Celtics didn’t push the proposals, though, because the Garnett-to-the-Clippers possibility had fallen through.
But what if the Celtics had lowered their Garnett demands? Del Negro might have been able to persuade others in the Clippers organization to accept a trade for Garnett if the asking price was Bledsoe or Jordan, rather than both, plus, say, a 2015 draft pick (the one the Celtics eventually got for allowing Doc Rivers out of his contract). Bledsoe, languishing behind Chris Paul, was more readily available.
That would have prompted the Celtics to be more active in dealing Pierce, and they probably could have gotten the Nets to agree to a deal involving Humphries, Brooks, a 2014 pick and either Teletovic or Bogdanovic.
Hypothetically, then, the Celtics’ haul might have looked like this: Bledsoe, Humphries, Brooks, Bogdanovic and first-rounders in ’14 and ’15.
Compare that to what the Celtics did get for Pierce and Garnett: Humphries, Brooks, Wallace, Joseph and first-rounders in ’14, ’16 and ’18. That means one more draft pick, but no budding youngsters like Bledsoe (or Jordan) and Bogdanovic (or Teletovic). Plus, there is the weighty contract of Wallace, who has been increasingly cantankerous in the locker room.
It’s speculation, of course, and there were plenty of hurdles in the way before Ainge and the Celtics could have pulled off such a series of moves — you can’t blame Ainge for the what-ifs that didn’t materialize. But had Boston somehow been able to thread that needle, had the Garnett-to-the-Clippers and Pierce-to-the Nets deals somehow worked out, the Celtics’ rebuilding program would be much farther along already.

Manchester United have begun negotiations over a new contract with striker Wayne Rooney, according to Sky sources.
The 28-year-old has 18 months left on his current deal, but the club has contacted Rooney's representatives and the offer to start talks over a contract extension has been accepted.
Rooney is likely to be offered a four-year extension to his current terms with both the club and the England striker keen to secure a deal.
The England international is reportedly still a target for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, whose decision to allow midfielder Juan Mata to move to Old Trafford may actually improve the Red Devils' chances of securing Rooney on a longer-term contract.
Prior to Rooney signing his previous deal, the player expressed his unhappiness with the direction the club appeared to be taking and the lack of top-class players they were recruiting.
Mata arrived at Carrington on Saturday to undergo his medical ahead of the completion of his club-record £37m move from Stamford Bridge.
The Spain international is expected to train with his new team-mates on Sunday, with United set to conclude the deal on Monday when the paperwork can be submitted to the Premier League.

FA Cup: Liverpool win 2-0 at Bournemouth in fourth round

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge: Liverpool's deadly duo

Liverpool avoided a repeat of last season's FA Cup fourth-round exit away to lower-league opposition as they won 2-0 at Bournemouth.
A year ago, the Reds were bundled out at this stage of the competition in a shock 3-2 reverse at League One outfit Oldham.
Skipper Steven Gerrard started that game on the bench, but he was named in the side on Saturday against Eddie Howe's Cherries, currently lying 16th in the Sky Bet Championship.
And despite a spirited display from the south-coast club, they were unable to provide an upset at the Goldsands Stadium.

On-loan Chelsea winger Victor Moses opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a low shot into the corner from the edge of the box and, after Bournemouth had had a second-half penalty appeal turned down, Daniel Sturridge was put through on the hour mark to double the visitors' lead.
Sturridge's composed finish will have pleased watching England manager Roy Hodgson, although the most influential player on the pitch with both assists was Luis Suarez, whose Uruguay side face the Three Lions at the World Cup in just under five months' time.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers also included Brad Jones and Martin Kelly in his starting line-up, while Howe named the same XI that drew 1-1 at home to Watford last time out.

Jones had to be alert early on as Simon Francis' deep free-kick eluded his Cherries team-mates, with the ball pushed over by the Australian.
Marc Pugh then headed Matt Ritchie's free-kick wide at the back post, but it was the Reds who forged ahead just past the midway point of the first half.
Suarez got away down the right flank past Elliott Ward and picked out a fine looping pass right across the penalty area to Moses who was waiting on the left corner of the area.

The Nigeria winger cut onto his right foot and fired a low shot inside the near post and past the despairing dive of Lee Camp, who was perhaps unsighted by the defenders in front of him, but will be disappointed to have been beaten in such a fashion.
Harry Arter flashed a free-kick wide, Andrew Surman saw a shot deflected behind and Cherries captain Tommy Elphick headed over from the resulting corner.
However, it was Liverpool who came closest to scoring again before the interval, only for Jordan Henderson to fire over the bar after Suarez had wriggled free in the box.
Bournemouth continued to push for an equaliser and on 58 minutes, Kelly was fortunate not to concede a penalty when he pulled the shirt of Francis on a corner.

But shortly afterwards, Liverpool doubled their advantage. Suarez slid a perfect pass into the run of Sturridge, who coolly clipped the ball beyond the advancing Camp and inside the far post.
The former Chelsea forward came close to adding a third as he latched on to Henderson's long ball and lobbed Camp - with his effort going behind off the crossbar.
With the hosts chasing a way back into the game, Sturridge once again worked some space but could only shoot wide after cutting inside.
Suarez was the next to come close as he beat the offside trap to attempt his own lob, sending his effort over goalkeeper and crossbar.
Bournemouth actually had more attempts on goal throughout the 90 minutes but with their 'SAS' partnership in such good form, Liverpool were able to see the game out and secure a spot in Sunday evening's draw for the last 16.

Transfer news: Chelsea's Juan Mata having Manchester United medical

Transfer news: Chelsea's Juan Mata having Manchester United medical

David Moyes welcomes Juan Mata ahead of his Manchester United medical
Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has arrived to undergo his medical at Manchester United ahead of his proposed transfer, the Premier League champions have confirmed.
The Spain international is expected to train with his new team-mates on Sunday, with United set to conclude the deal on Monday when the paperwork can be submitted to the Premier League.
The Old Trafford club posted a photo on their Twitter feed which showed Mata being greeted by United boss David Moyes after arriving by helicopter at the club's training ground.
United and Chelsea have already reached agreement over the transfer but the Spain star still has to agree personal terms and pass his medical.
United had confirmed on their Twitter feed on Friday evening: "MUFC has reached agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Juan Mata for a club record fee.
"The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course."
And Chelsea confirmed: "Chelsea Football Club has reached an agreement with Manchester United for the transfer of Juan Mata. The move is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms."
United will reportedly hand over £37m for Mata, far exceeding their previous club record of £30.75m they spent on Dimitar Berbatov in 2008.
The fee also represents a hefty profit for Chelsea on a player they signed for £23.5m from Valencia in 2011.
Speaking at his Friday afternoon press conference, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wished Mata well.
He said: "He's a fantastic player and despite not playing a lot for us in the last period could be a very important player for us. But Juan had this fantastic opportunity for him.

"It's what he wants. It's what he asked us to accept. Chelsea Football Club is proud to act this way, in an open way, in a human way."
Mata was named Chelsea's player of the year in each of the past two seasons but has been reduced to a bit-part role since Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge.
"The offer we've received we feel is the right offer for the quality of the player," Mourinho said. "It's a good move for Juan, it's a good move for the Premier League and the offer is the right offer. He was fantastic for Chelsea, and Chelsea were fantastic for him."
Responding to criticism of the sale from some supporters, he said: "If the fans are sad that Juan is leaving, I will say that we are also sad. No one is jumping around the place."

Salah medical

Mata's replacement in the Chelsea squad will be Mohamed Salah, subject to a successful medical.
Salah has agreed personal terms, but Mourinho explained that he will have to have his medical - the last step in the deal to sign him from Basel - in Switzerland.
"He's a non-EC player. He cannot come to England for his medical, so we have to travel to meet him and to have the medical, probably in Switzerland. Only after that can we do the paperwork to bring him to the country," said Mourinho, who is excited by the signing.
"I like the fact that he can play the same way our attacking players do, which is players with adaptability, to play right, left, or behind the striker.
"He's young, he's fast, he's creative, he's enthusiastic. When we analysed him he looks the kind of humble personality on the pitch, ready to work for the team and to work and to adapt himself to a new life.

"We believe if he comes that he will have a similar process to the Willian one. Willian needed two or three months to grow up and to feel comfortable playing for us (following his August signing from Anzhi Makhachkala).
"We think with him and (Andre) Schurrle, (Eden) Hazard, Oscar and Willian we will be fine.
"We lose an experienced top player like Juan, but we bring in a young player with great potential.
"Willian did that transition from his previous world to the top world of football. Hopefully, if Salah comes, he can do the same. We are ready to help, we are ready to support.
"He has some experience in Europe, the Europa League, Champions League, so he's not a naive boy arriving in the jungle.
"Hopefully he comes and hopefully with the talented players we have around in the same positions we all can develop together."

Illness can be detected with smell

Illness can be detected with smell Individuals have the ability to smell in the event that somebody is sick, new research prescribes. The scientists, at the Karolinska Institute, in Sweden, say there is even recounted and investigative proof to recommend that diverse illnesses have specific emanations.
Researchers claim people can smell assuming that somebody's invulnerable framework is remarkably active. They say individuals can smell that the invulnerable framework has gone into overdrive inside only a couple of hours of presentation to microscopic organisms.
Case in point, scrofula, a contamination of the lymph hubs, is accounted for to possess an aroma similar to stale brewskie, and an individual who experiences diabetes is known to at times have breath that resembles acetone.
Professor Mats Olsson, who headed the study, said, "In this flow study we have examined the capacity of people to distinguish sickness by emanation. Having the capacity to identify these odors might speak to a discriminating acclimatization that might permit us to stay away from possibly unsafe sicknesses."
People can smell in the event that somebody's resistant framework is remarkably dynamic since they have been laid open to microscopic organisms.
Researchers further said that taken together, these results strongly support that humans emit a chemical cue during a generalized sickness response that can be perceived by others.

Key to body's use of free calcium illustrated by scientists

Key to body's use of free calcium illustrated by scientistsResearchers could resolve a key venture in how "free" calcium - the kind not held in bones - is overseen in the form, a finding that could support in the improvement of new medicines for a mixture of neurological issue that incorporate Parkinson's infection.
Seeming online this week in Nature Chemical Biology, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University depict their utilization of small "lights" and synthetic "rope" to uncover how calcium is regulated.
David Yue, educator of biomedical building and neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University said that expansive proteins called calcium channels are the guardians that figure out when calcium enters units. Installed in unit films, these channels open and close to control calcium stream into the cell. The point when calcium goes into units, it sets off a course of essential movement, however simply the perfect measure of calcium must enter - overall, issues emerge.
To attain this adjust, two substance controllers tie to calcium channels as a brake and quickening agent for calcium entrance. Calmodulin, one sort of calcium channel-tying protein, prevents calcium from moving through, while different proteins, regarded as calcium-tying proteins, quicken calcium section.
Inserted in unit layers, these channels open and close to manage calcium stream into the cell. The point when calcium goes into units, it sets off a course of key action, however simply the perfect measure of calcium must enter - generally, issues emerge.
